Beliau mengajar di Program Sarjana dan Magister Teknik Perminyakan UPN Veteran Yogyakarta sejak tahun 1983 dan memiliki pengalaman luas sebagai konsultan di berbagai perusahaan minyak. Prof. Herianto juga aktif sebagai instruktur pelatihan di banyak perusahaan terkemuka di Indonesia\, termasuk Pertamina\, Chevron\, dan Total Indonesia. \n
