Deep Water Drilling

Background & About the Course

Deepwater drilling is the process of drilling oil and gas wells in waters deeper than 150 meters, utilizing advanced technology to address technical and economic challenges. As the demand for energy increases and onshore and shallow water reserves deplete, deepwater drilling technology continues to evolve, supported by major companies such as Halliburton, Schlumberger, and Transocean.

Deepwater drilling employs Mobile Drilling Units (MODUs) such as semi-submersible rigs or drill ships to reach oil reservoirs on the seabed. Technologies like risers and subsea completion systems facilitate the transfer of oil from reservoirs to the surface, either to floating production platforms (FPSOs) or directly to shore via pipelines. These innovations position deepwater drilling as a strategic solution to meet global energy needs.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the concepts, challenges, and technologies used in deepwater drilling operations.
  • Identify the main components and types of drilling rigs, including semi-submersibles, drill ships, and subsea completion systems.
  • Explain the deepwater drilling process, from site selection to oil production using riser technology and subsea systems.
  • Analyze potential operational risks in deepwater drilling and apply mitigation measures based on international safety standards.
  • Apply technical knowledge to enhance efficiency and sustainability in deepwater drilling operations.
  • Discuss the latest trends in deepwater drilling technology and their implications for the global energy industry.
